The OverlayKey X is a split keyboard meant to be placed on top of a specific laptop, in order to replace its native keyboard. It was designed by @yfuku_, and the image was taken at a Japanese keyboard meetup.
This post is part of a series on unique keyboards of which I’ve collected pictures over the years. All of the keyboards in the series were designed by fellow community members. At the time, I rarely collected context or the source, so information may be lacking at times.
Why is it special?
- It’s quite low profile, using Kailh’s rare X-switches.
- It’s one of the few keyboards to be made specifically for a laptop.
- While aimed at laptop use, it still offers a split layout at a comfortable angle, even fitting six columns as well as some extra center keys.
- It has a hole to allow you to still use the fingerprint sensor. Pretty clever!
